Bernardone’s Trattoria | Case Study

Overview

Bernardone’s Trattoria is a family-owned and -operated pizzeria that brings a slice of Italy to Farmington, New Mexico. Proprietors Mario and Laura Bernardone and their family offer their guests a trans-temporal Italian dining experience.

In the villages of Italy, where Mario’s grandparents grew up, local pizzerias were a place families, neighbors and friends gathered to enjoy simple yet delicious food. His bloodlines reveal a history of family-run ristorantes, sharing time-honored recipes tracing back to old Abruzzi.

Mario and Laura were opening an Italian restaurant in an area of the country where they’re not all that common and needed a brand campaign that promoted Bernardone’s Trattoria by educating prospective guests on their unique cuisine.

Branding

We developed an integrated brand campaign that educated consumers on the quality, tradition and history of their time-honored recipes tracing back to the villages of old Abruzzi.

Honoring the food they serve, which is made from scratch every day, the brand identity is a hand-drawn, heart-shaped tomato with the tagline, in hand-written script, “where food loves you back.”

The homemade feel extends to other aspects of the brand initiative, with a hand-painted Italian flag and a warm stucco-finished background with ragged edges.

Bergeron Creative designed a menu that incorporates the homemade look and feel, with a hand-painted Italian flag and a warm stucco-finished background with ragged edges. The menu includes individual pages that made it easy to update.

A more detailed, folded version of the menu with information about the restaurant was developed for catering events.

A pizza box worthy of the Bernardone Trattoria name was created to reinforce the brand identity and promote the restaurant. As you open the pizza box, the inside flap reveals the tagline, “where food loves you back.”

Digital

The website is the hub of this web-centric integrated brand campaign, and reinforces the Bernardone’s brand identity with a made-from-scratch look and feel. The website’s purpose is to educate consumers on the quality, tradition and history of their time-honored recipes that tracing back to the villages of old Abruzzi.

Many of Bernardone’s quests have visited Italy and have tasted the country’s savory cuisine. An interactive section of the site, called, “Taste of Italy,” allows guests who have visited Italy to post their thoughts onto Bernardone’s traditional family recipes and compare them to those they have consumed in Italy.

Bergeron Creative programmed the website using WordPress, an open-source content management system (CMS) that featured an easy-to-use dashboard interface that allows Bernardone’s staff to make timely content changes inhouse.

Social Media

We branded social media channels for Bernardone’s, including Facebook, Twitter and Flicker. Facebook serves as an extension of the website, where guests can interact with the brand by asking questions and leaving recommendations. Twitter allows followers to receive daily tweets on that day’s specials. Flickr is a repository of photos of the cuisine, restaurant, entertainment and family.

Media

We used billboards to promote Bernardone’s within a 30-mile radius of their Farmington location. The outdoor media features their tagline, “where food loves you back,” with a heart-shaped pizza and pasta dish in place of the word, “loves.” The billboards also emphasized the low cost of their Italian cuisine.

 Results

We’re happy to report Bernardone’s hitting all their sales benchmarks and has seen an increase in their catering initiatives.

According to Mario Bernardone, proprietor of Bernardone’s Trattoria, “No matter how excellent a recommendation I write for Al Bergeron it will not be sufficient to wholly describe to a prospective client how much Al’s influence has affected our growth. Bernardone’s Trattoria is on board with Al and is once again excited about our future—thanks Al!”

“Al Bergeron is the most imaginative person I have ever met, and his out-of-the-box thinking is tempered by a logical set of strategies that are pointedly directed toward high-end, long-term success.”

“Al makes you appear classier, smarter, more efficient, brighter, and better than you believe you are—and then, eventually, you start to believe Al’s dream. The reality is that you’ve become the success that Al envisioned from the beginning! If your business needs catapulting, or if you’re convinced a change would be painful, —Bergeron Creative Studios is definitely the first call you need to make!”
